Once it began it turned into a competition if, you were a country worth taking notice of you had a piece of Africa. Money, manifest destiny, and international competition.
Well, reasons for Imperialism, if that's what you mean, were the following:
Political: For power and national prestige
Economic: To gain resources from colonies and lands
Social: "White Man's Burden" by Rudyard Kipling: Goal was to "civilize the natives" by giving healthcare, education and religion.
