In the United States, federal general elections are held on the first Tuesday after November 1; the calendar date varies between November 2 and November 8.
Federal elections occur every two years in even numbered years (there is an election for state and/or local offices and issues every year on the same date, however). The entire US House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate is up for election every two years. Presidential elections are held every four years, in years evenly divisible by four (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, etc.).
In the US, the general election is always held on Tuesday following the first Monday in November.
In US usage, "General Elections" are generally considered to be the larger elections every four years that include the vote for President, while "Mid-Term Elections" are the elections held two years off-set. The others are usually just termed "Local Elections".
Each higher level election includes the lower level elections as appropriate, so in a General, you usually have all the same two year offices as in a mid-term and all the one year offices as in a local.
