Tennessee legislators base salary is approximately $19,008 per year. They also receive an allowance for an office back home of $12,000 per year. In addition they will receive mileage of 45 cents per mile round trip, however this expense can only be claimed one day per week and only if they make the trip to Nashville for legislative business. Finally legislators receive a per diem payment of $174.00 for each day they are in session and in attendance. This portion of the per diem is only paid until the 90th legislative day is reached (a legislative day is a day the full body is in floor session). Per Diem is also received when legislators are in Nashville on legislative business when not in session.

Below would be an example for a legislator who lives 100 miles from the capitol:

Salary: $19,008

Office Allowance: $12,000

In session and 4 days a week (3 session/committee days one committee only days) from the 2nd Tuesday in January through the last week in May (20 weeks): $15,720

Out of session but average one trip to Nashville per week (32 weeks): $8,448

Total annual compensation for this example: $55,176

Legislators are responsible for their own expenses. Therefore travel expenses to and from Nashville and around their district is paid by the legislator. Food, meals and lodging are also paid out of pocket.
