From the mid 1390s till 1877-78 Bulgaria was under Ottoman Turkish rule. The people rebelled in 1876, whereupon the Turks responded with massacres, torture and various other atrocities, such as burning down villages, plundering and raping. In the end the Bulgarians appealed to Russia for help, and the Russian army inflicted a series of defeats on the Ottoman Empire, which resulted in part of Bulgaria gaining independence in 1878, with a further part added in 1885.
NB! colonize is the American version of English word coloni-se (s instead of z).
