According to the IL Constitution, the legislature is vested in a General Assembly. By law, the General Assembly divides the Legislative Districts as equally as possible into three groups.
Federally: Members of Parliament (MPs) Provincially: Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) or Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) Municipally: Councillors ================ Provincial politicians are known by a variety of names. The most common name is Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). The four western provinces and the three Atlantic provinces use this designation, as do the three territories. An Ontario politician is called Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP). A Québec politician is a Member of the National Assembly (MNA). A politician in Newfoundland and Labrador is a Member of the House of Assembly (MHA). A municipal politician is sometimes referred to as an alderman.
Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) =========================== The names of the legislatures at the provincial level of government in Canada display a considerable variation. The most common is "Legislative Assembly" and the politicians elected to them are called "Members of the Legislative Assembly" or MLAs. British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia employ this designation. In the three territories (Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut) the term is also "Legislative Assembly." In Ontario, however, the legislature is called the "Provincial Parliament," in Québec it is the "National Assembly," and in Newfoundland and Labrador, it is the "House of Assembly." The elected members in those provinces are called MPPs, MNAs, and MHAs accordingly.
Election of members, qualification's, and Determining Representation
The three members of the Legislative branch that directly represent you in Congress are your two Senators and your Representative. Every state has two Senators, and each Senator serves the entire state. The number of Representatives for each state varies based on population, with each district electing a Representative to serve in Congress.
