Currently, there remain only four countries that describe themselves as "Communist":
- Vietnam
- People's Republic of China
- Laos (known formally as the Lao People's Democratic Republic)
- Cuba
Past Communist states include any member-nation of the former Soviet Union, along with:
- Albania
- Benin
- Bulgaria
- Czechoslovakia
- East Germany
- Ethiopia
- Grenada
- Kampuchea
- Mongolia
- Mozambique
- North Vietnam
- North Korea (known formally as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea) *
- Poland
- Romania
- Somalia
- South Yemen
- Yugoslavia
* - Claims of today's DRPK (North Korea) being Communist are somewhat incorrect as modern North Korea follows it's own "Juche Idea".
The communist order of society is primarily based on formation of communes, where production of all kinds are undertaken. It was expected that it will eventually lead to socialism. Socialism is a system for the equal distribution of wealth. But wherever formed, the communes failed in their target achievement. Coercion, torture, imprisonment, seclusion, exile or even brutal beating to death did not bring the expected results. There was no wealth produced there except in authoritarian figures. There was only poverty shrouded in statistics. Thus the question arose. As there was no wealth and there was only poverty, are the communists meaning by socialism to distribute this poverty equally among the masses?
The failure of communes were attributed to failure of hearts, which was the truth. Communism was conceived to be the highest language of the Heart. But in whichever countries communism reigned, in fact pseudo communism ruled, there were only torn hearts and bleeding souls. Not communism, but power corrupted the authorities. In this world, the first place where a communist government came to power not through a blood thirsty revolution but through a ballot was in the province of Kerala in South India. There, their founder leader, comrade P.Krishna Pillai was bitten by a snake and died while roaming the hills and forests there, constituting their party. It is said that no communists there have ever died bitten by a snake since. How will a snake bite a person who travels in cars alone?
This condition of corruption had been universal. It was then that Gorbecheve came and opened the doors and windows. Glasnost and Peristroika were human. Glasnost means, open approach, which means open the doors- let sunshine and air come inside. That was what he did. Why he had to open the doors was that they were already remaining closed. Peristroika means continued progress. It had to be reproclaimed, because all progress had been struck. Ninety years wasted in a nation's precious life.
The ideal of communism has never been in force. No human saga of peace and brotherhood has ever been reported from those countries. In it's true sense, there are no communist countries and there never have been. Carl Marx fuming his head twenty long years in the British Museum came to no use. As is well known, Communism has three origins, i.e., three sources or roots- the English economics, the German philosophy and the French socialism. Adam Smith, Hegel or Robespierre never found their way into these so-called communist countries. But there has been communes and there still are. The Neanderthaals and the Cromagnons did organize and live in perfect communes.
As of May 2012, there are four countries with a communist party ruling. These are China, Cuba, Laos and Vietnam. Also sometimes considered a communist country is North Korea, but this is often disputed. Note that four out of the five supposed communist countries are located in Eastern Asia.
There are currently 5 Communist countries. They are: China, Cuba, Laos, North Korea and Vietnam.
