Nationalism is a hard topic to decide if it is good or bad, although it can bring about dictators like Hitler and Napoleon, Nationalism does have it's good traits.
For example; In sports a whole nation can be brought together to cheer for their country's team. People who would normally be competitors join forces to cheer for one cause. This is like in any competition, but the main focus is that it can be used as a tool to bring people together.
This also creates pride in one's country, fueling confidence. When one goes travelling to a forgien land why do they put a Canadian, or American flag on their rucksack? Because their proud to display that their part of that country. In this way, nationalism influences confidence. Also, I'm sure as many others have, when travelling to Another Country, if one happens to encounter another citizen of your country in that forgien place you and that parson feel immediatley bonded. This is also another positive occurance.
Nationalism also makes the wellbeing of one's nation important and aids in economic advances.
About the only positive that nationalism does is it allows for greater unity of a nation rather than a nation decided among political, religious or ethnic lines but almost always comes with a price of lost freedoms greater than any benefit.
Political scientists often agree that there are two types of nationalism, namely Democratic (or inclusive) nationalism which emphasises the right of geographic communities to self-government, based on residence rather than ethnic or religious considerations. The other nationalism is exclusive nationalism which can be xenophobic and based on the theory that one ethnic, religious or liguistic group has a right to occupy a geographic area and control it under 'their' laws or customs.
Nationalism is helpful to a nation in that it can promote the people's love and pride in their county. In the nationalism that existed world wide before WWI many artists and musicians created art in the name of their countries.
Nationalism helps a nation to creat his own cultural identity,love for the motherland. It helps the whole nation to unite in case of emergency or external aggression. However, in this era of globalization, no nation can live like the frogs in the well. The false vanity of nationalism deters them to rise towards the level of internationalism,which helps in bonding universal brotherhood.
