Checks and Balances a.k.a. Separation of powers. During the American Revolution, American leaders were worried about the misrule of executives. They substituted legislative supremacy in state constitutions and in the AC ( Articles of Confederation, which was first Constitution of the US) However, by implementing this "supremacy" they thought that placing power in an elected rep. body would make government effective and nontryannical. This is why we under the constitution we have different articles.
The executive branch (presidential) can nominate judges to the supreme court and also veto congressional legislative acts (Congress). The supreme court can declare both the executive branch and legislative unconstitutional. And Congress can overturn the presidents veto, impeach the president, control the budget and do the same thing with judicial branch.
Each Article under the constitution reps the separation of power
Article 1: Legislative Power
Article 2: Executive Power
Article 3: Judicial Power
