Denmark seem to have been established in prehistoric times (which among the brute Vikings is not as long ago as in more advanced countries!), so nobody really knows. The towns grew bigger and more important because the Danes made them centers of trade. Anglo-Saxon English borrowed many new words from Danish. English kings were eventually forced to be of Danish descent.
