For years European countries were imperializing other lands, and now the US wanted in. Hawaii was rich in land, resources, and had new people that America could sell its goods to. We came in building huge plantains, warehouses, railroads, etc... Hawaiians didn't like us taking over their land, coming into their lives and trying to change their language, their traditions, their culture, their whole way of life. They began crying "Hawaii for Hawaiians", Queen Liliuokalani was determined to get rid of American influence- we were outraged and had her removed from power, replaced by wealthy planter Sanford P. Dole. When Cleveland took office, he supported expansion and signed an annexation treaty that made the Hawaiian islands a permanent US territory.
The Hawaiian Islands were ruled by Queen Liliuokalani. She was usurped from the throne by the US sugar companies.
