During the agricultural revolution the invention of machinery led to a decrease in the number of workers required on farms. Unemployed people needed to move to find work. The industrial revolution and the mechanisation of industrial processes meant that goods could be produced in greater quantities and more cheaply. Factories were built in areas with access to raw materials (particularly coal and water) and transport (by road and water - notably canals). Manchester became a centre for the production of cotton goods, new factories were built and people moved to Manchester because work was available.

People moved to Manchester during the Industrial Revolution for job opportunities in the textile industry, as the city was a hub for cotton production. The city's location also made it a strategic center for trade and transportation. Additionally, its growth was fueled by advancements in technology and innovation during that time period.

Why did people move to Manchester in 1801?

People moved to Manchester in 1801 because that's where the jobs were at that time. The Industrial Revolution was in full swing, and technological advancements had decreased the number of jobs available in homes and on farms. The jobs were in the cities. Manchester experienced a six-fold increase in population between 1771 and 1831. Unfortunately, cities such as Manchester were not prepared for such an influx of people, and horrible living conditions and disease were the result for many.
