A very limited one, in the end. According to most analysts, reforms after the fall of the USSR were only temporary. After Putin's ascendancy to the Presidency, Parliament was once again reduced to a rubber-stamp institute and the nation is now run by Putin and a handpicked group of confidants, many with a KGB background and some oligarchs who have chosen to side with him and who have enabled Putin and his family to become extremely rich themselves. Although there is press freedom, any paper critical of the President's policies may become subject of - usually fiscal - investigation which will always 'discover' enough irregularities to justify editors being jailed and/or the paper to be shut down.

The intelligentsia in Russia played a crucial role in advocating for social and political reforms, particularly during the 19th and early 20th centuries. They were instrumental in pushing for modernization, education reforms, and political change to address the country's social and economic issues. Many prominent intellectuals and thinkers within the intelligentsia also contributed to the rise of revolutionary movements that ultimately led to the overthrow of the Tsarist regime.

What did Leon Trotsky believe caused the spread of Marxism at the end of the nineteenth century?

As far as Marxism in Russia was concerned, Leon Trotsky saw the spread of this ideology as the natural result of conflicts among the power brokers in Russia. He saw that the Russian intelligentsia was indulging in populist political theories with the idealistic revival of the peasantry and its rejection of capitalism. At the same time the intelligentsia was being courted by capitalists who were baiting them with rewards of wealth that would generated by supporting this class of Russians. From Trotsky's viewpoint the intelligentsia came to its senses when the bourgeois intelligentsia realized that Marxism was the answer to Russia's problems. Marxism, for Trotsky, ended any more leanings to Populism and its failed past.
