No normally the DVD player will just say that it can not read the disk. If the disk is damaged, dirty, wet, or even broken in places then it can damaged the laser and other equipment.

Most new DVD players can read pretty damaged disks.

Damaged as in scratches, smudges, and other small disfigures.

It being dirty probably isn't much of an issue unless its absolutely covered in dust, has chemicals on it, or has other things that you probably should not put on it.

No, bad code from a DVD cannot corrupt a DVD player physically. However, it may cause the player to malfunction or freeze, requiring a restart or even causing it to become unresponsive until the problematic DVD is removed.
