The story "The Soul of the Great Bell" is titled this way because it centers around the idea of the soul or spirit of the bell being so pure and powerful that it can influence events and people. The bell's soul is believed to possess mystical qualities, and its significance drives the narrative of the story.
This short story was written by an American-born author (Lafcadio Hearn) who fell in love with Asian culture and retold a number of Chinese and Japanese folk stories. In this one, the bell really does have a soul, as I will try to explain. The legend from hundreds of years ago tell us that an emperor in the Ming dynasty wanted a bell that would make beautiful and impressive sounds (ringing bells are a part of Buddhist, Shinto and Taoist religious practice). He found a crafstman to make it, and it was supposed to be made of gold, brass and silver, three metals that refused to get along or co-operate with each other, making the bell sound hollow. The emperor was angry and threatened to kill the craftsman. But he begged for one last chance to get it right.
The craftsman had a beautiful and innocent daughter, and when she knew her father was in danger, she went to the astrologer for advice. She was told that only the blood of a young virgin girl would make the bell ring properly and make the various metals cooperate. His young daughter knew immediately what she had to do and she jumped into the kiln fire, killing herself but providing the ingredient needed to make the bell ring beautifully. (In Asian culture, sad to say, the lives of girls were not regarded as very important, so it is not surprising that the girl is willing to sacrifice her own life to make the bell ring beautifully and save her father's life.) And the soul of the bell is hers-- to this day, when the bell rings, it sounds as if it is saying her name.
The title "The Soul of the Great Bell" symbolizes the importance and significance of the bell in the story. The bell is personified and seen as the heart and soul of the community, reflecting its cultural and spiritual value. The title captures the essence of the story's theme regarding tradition, sacrifice, and the power of a symbol to unite a community.
The story is titled "The Soul of the Great Bell" because it explores how the bell's creator imbues it with a soul to symbolize Beijing's unity and protect the city. The bell comes to represent the heart and spirit of the city, hence the title "The Soul of the Great Bell."
