The scarcity of surviving Anglo-Saxon poetry can be attributed to various factors, such as the perishable nature of the materials it was written on, invasions and wars that led to destruction, and the lack of widespread literacy in the society at the time. Additionally, the Christianization of England resulted in a shift away from pagan themes and a decline in the preservation of older works.
Two types of Anglo-Saxon poetry are heroic and elegiac.
