Most likely, the Mahabharata, as a major Sanskrit epic of ancient India, is the second longest of the world's known surviving epic poems. It fills more than 74,000 verses with about 1.8 million words. It's thought that the epic was worked out, and added to, over the course of about 1,600-2,700 years [about the 8th century before Christ, to about the 4th century A.D.]. The longest most likely is the Epic of King Gesar. It packs over 20 million words into more than 1 million verses. It's thought to be about 1,000 years old. And some 140 specially trained Ballad singers still recite the epic to Buryat, Mongolian, Tibetan and Tu ethnic audiences of Central Asia, and possibly still in Tibet.

The epic of king Gesar is nowhere in touch of Mahabharata and Ramayan. Both are very long. The epic is only 10% of Mahabharata.

I've always thought it was the Bhagavad Gita -(The Song of God). It is a symbolic dialogue between Arjuna (a king) and Lord Krishna (acting as his charioteer) on a field of battle

The spiritual poem comprises 18 chapters of the Mahabharata, which has over one hundred thousand verses. The longest ever book in a poetic form with proper meteric verses and stanza was a one thousand year old poetry written by Firdousi in the 10th century. The book is titled SHAHNAMA . It was 60,000 verses and it took him more than 34 years to complete it . In 1988 , Late Shri Harbans Bhalla ,(born on 6th May1940 Parsur ,Sialkot,Pakistan) broke this record with his book "PEELYA PATTAR" . THE BOOK IS THE LONGEST POETRY EVER WRITTEN . IT HAS 1,40,000 SENTENCES OR 70 ,000 VERSES . THE BOOK IS IN PUNJABI LANGUAGE ,but the script is in URDU. This is known as SHAH-MUKHI language . This book is under publication and will be released in MAY 2009
