Narcissus was in love with himself, and every young lady who fell for him he would of course turn down. So as a result he was punished by the goddess Nemesis to stay in front of a pond and stare and fall in love with his own reflection until his death.

The myth of Narcissus is about a beautiful young man who falls in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. He becomes so infatuated with himself that he cannot leave his reflection, eventually wasting away and transforming into a flower that bears his name. The story serves as a cautionary tale against vanity and self-obsession.

Allusion to echo and narcissus?

The myth describes why Narcissus Lilies (which we call Daffodils) always face down. Echo was already cursed by Hera to repeat what she heard, but in the myth, she pines away because of the spurning of Narcissus. Only her voice remains, creating the echos we hear today.

What time did narcissus live in?

Because Greek mythology was preserved as an oral tradition, rather than being published in books with copyright dates, we cannot always give an exact date for a specific myth, but I would estimate that the myth of Narcissus dates from about 500 BC.
