It is the work itself, not the story, that is epic. An epic in literature is painted as it were on a vast canvas with larger than life heroes and deeds. It is often steeped in mythology. Well known examples include: The Iliad, the Odyssey, Beowulf, the Nibelungenlied. Notice that these four are all in verse. As a literary genre, an epic is an extended narrative in verse. Novels like those cited above are said to have an epic story if they resemble in their scope the traditional verse epics.
