Jeffers' biggest influences were the landscape where he lived for many years: the rocky, beautiful Central Coast of California. As far as literature is concerned, some influences include the ancient Greek tragedians, especially Euripides (Whose Medea he freely adapted), the Upanishads, old English-Scottish border ballads, W.B. Yeats, the Old Testament, the Elizabethan poets & dramatists. Certainly Blake & Whitman must have influenced his long line.
Robinson Jeffers was influenced by his deep connection to nature, his interest in philosophy and mythology, and the social and political events of his time. He was also inspired by the rugged beauty of the California coastline where he lived, which often served as the setting for his poems.
