The poem "Remember" was written by Christina Rossetti--- an English poet. It is a Sonnet with 14 lines and has a rhyme scheme of a b b a a b b a and c d d e c e. "Remember" is about a woman (the narrator) who knows her death is imminent. It gives the reader visual images of someone speaking to their loved ones on their death bed. During the first eight lines she expresses her longing to always be remembered. In the last six lines, the narrator completely changes her mind because she realises that remembering her may cause the person she loves (the person she is addressing in this poem) grief. As a result, she decides that she would rather be forgotten so he can be happy.
In the first line the poet begins with the words "Remember me when I am gone away" (1), showing her desire to never be forgotten. The idea of separation is also introduced. The pain of her separating from her loved one is stressed when she tells him that he will not be able to "hold [her] by the hand" or even experience the "future that [he] plann'd" for them. Furthermore, from the fourth line---"Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay", one can tell that the narrator is uncertain whether she loves this person or not.
Later on in the poem the narrator finally realises that if he remembers her then he might "remember and be sad". Although she wants to be remembered, she does not want him to grieve. She decides that it would be "better by far" that he should "forget and smile"---be happy without memories of her---rather than "remember and be sad". This poem is particularly memorable because it is about a woman that is selfless enough to advice her family to smile instead of grieving from her memories.
In "Remember" by Christina Rossetti, the poet uses techniques such as personification to address death as a person, as well as repetition of the word "remember" to emphasize the importance of remembrance. The poem also employs imagery related to nature, such as the changing seasons, to evoke a sense of the passage of time.
"Remember" by Christina Rossetti is a lyrical and introspective poem that conveys themes of love, memory, and loss. The language used is emotive, expressive, and rich in imagery, creating a sense of longing and nostalgia. The poem's structure, with its repetition and circular form, enhances its emotional impact and provides a dream-like quality.
It means everyday things can be compared to life
From the poor choices that lead the speaker to become a fool, the speaker struggles with sorrow and regrets their decisions when their life is almost over. The speaker learned a lesson about life, to cherish it. Christina Rossetti causes the reader to deliberate if they regretted the things they had missed out during their personal experiences. She advises us to not miss out the opportunities, but to value our lives. The poem is a good example of the use of simple metaphors that help create Rossetti's attitude in "A Daughter of Eve". Summer represented happiness and knowledge as winter signified loneliness and despair. For spring, it meant a new beginning. The metaphors that are used help the readers to grasp the feeling of the poem. The metaphors help to notice the tone from her poetic writing; it identified shame, loneliness and depression. All the negative symptoms come from winter and not of hint of warmth in the speaker's life. This is how you know the speaker regrets what they had done.
