You can strengthen a hero by increasing the hero's experience points, gained in battles. Each time you get experience points, you can click on the hero you want to upgrade to the next level (there has to be enough experience points) and click upgrade. When you upgrade your hero, you can increase one of your hero's attributes (attack, politics or intelligence) by one. You can also strengthen a hero with the gears and stars system, only available on Age II though. Hope it helped! :D
