The poem "My Papa's Waltz" is about a young boy whose father is drunken by whiskey. The boy held on firmly to his father while they were dancing in the kitchen. the boy's mother was angry because of the romping which dismantled her kitchen. The father's knuckle was battered on one hand which either gives the idea that he is either a hard worker or a fighter. The father's belt buckle was being scraped by the boy's ear. Realise that the poet states that "my right ear scraped a buckle" and not " a buckle scraped my ear" which means that the boy does not blame the father for anything that happened to him during the waltz because he knows that the father is drunk. The father kept time upon the boy's head with his dirty palms which also can mean he is a hardworker. Then he carries his son off to bed with him still holding on to him.
