In the translation I read, Beowulf had no children (as he laments as he dies) but left the throne to the one thane who stood by him in the fight against the dragon.

The reasons for this are unknown, although a few friends and I suspect he may have been gay or had many affairs with women and was unaware of his children. The poem, however, doesn't tell us much about this. It skipped over a good 50 years of Beowulf's life, and anything could've happened during then.

Beowulf has a son named Heardred. His wife is never mentioned and no other children are specifically named in the poem.
