One of the greatest epics in English literature is "Paradise Lost" by John Milton. This poem tells the story of the Fall of Man as portrayed in The Bible, focusing on the characters of Satan, God, Adam, and Eve. "Paradise Lost" explores themes of rebellion, free will, and the nature of sin.
A famous epic song about medieval Spain is El Cid or, in Spanish, Cantar de Mio Cid, which was about a medieval Spanish hero popularly called The Cid.
Another is the Song of Roland, which celebrated the heroics of French Soldiers in a battle in the Spanish March.
The epic of Digenes Akritas (Akritae being the byzantine border guards of Anatolia).
The epic details the life of its eponymous hero, Basil, a man, as the epithet ("Two Blood Border Lord" or "Twain-born Borderer") signifies, of mixed Greek and Saracen blood. The first part of the epic details the lives of his parents, how they met, and how his father, an Emir, converted to Christianity after abducting and marrying Digenes' mother. The remainder of the epic discusses, often from a first-person point of view, Basil's acts of heroism on the Byzantine border.
Beowulf,a complete epic,is the oldest surviving Germanic epic as well as the longest & most important poem in ole English.
The Chronicles Of Gilgamesh and Beowulf in English, Illiad and Odessey in Greek and The Raamaayana and The Mahaa Bhaaratha in Sanscrit are the greatest examples of epic poetry. All of these are also considered oral epics.
One example of an epic poem is "The Odyssey" by Homer. This ancient Greek poem follows the adventure of Odysseus as he tries to return home after the Trojan War. It is a classic work of literature and is considered one of the greatest epic poems of all time.
Epic poetry, such as Homer's "Iliad" and "Odyssey," is often considered the form of ancient literature that became the basis for all genres. These epic poems served as foundational works that influenced the development of various literary genres and tropes that are still prevalent in modern literature.
All the earliest literature was originally oral and was only written down long after it was composed. The earliest preserved works of literature are epic poems - that is, poems that narrate heroic stories. (Verse is easier to memorize than prose). One of the oldest literary works is the Epic of Gilgamesh.

Geoffrey Chaucer is known for his significant influence on Middle English literature, not Old English. Chaucer's writing, particularly "The Canterbury Tales," helped to popularize the English language in literature and established vernacular English as a respected literary language. His works also contributed to the development of English as a language of literature and culture.
The Lord of the Rings is the best there is, if you like that sort of thing. Like all great art, anyone can "get" it, but the more one knows, the more there is to "get" in it. Tolkien's intent is to create an epic tradition in English, or perhaps to recapture the tradition of Old English literature that was cut off by the Norman Conquest and the influence of Continental literature. All that King Arthur stuff, for example, is French literature, not English, but it is much better known to English speakers than our own Beowulf is.Whether he succeeded is problematic. Certainly the phrase "Frodo lives" is pretty well understood in the English speaking world. But Peter Jackson's monumental failure of a movie ( it would have been great if the screenwriters hadn't made up most of the story themselves) suggests that maybe the modern audience doesn't get it after all.
