The word "metaphor" derives from many European terms for the word "sign" or "indication", though it was designed to indicate one thing and mean something totally different. Usually in the form of a catchphrase or a cliche, but most of the time, the message is understood.
If you've ever seem the movie Night at the Museum, the tiny little roman and cowboy were speaking to the guard "We might be small, but our hearts are large... metaphorically speaking." What he meant is that his conviction as a was great, but used the metaphor that his heart was large, which is obviously ridiculous as he was only an inch tall. You can also use it in a cliche as most metaphors are. Let's assume that Sam is attempting to get a ball out of a tree without success and he suddenly has an idea and mutters, "Fine then, there are more ways to skin a cat." He meant that there are other ways to get the ball out of the tree. The metaphor is the cliche.
One more... using a catchphrase. Mike was talking to Jim and says "Your a chip off the old block, aren't you Jimmy boy?" Jim responds, "Chip off what block?" and Mike will explain, "It was a metaphor, lad, I meant that you are exactly like your father."
