The poem sees the remains of a castle as standing for a symbol of life and time. The castle was once occupied; time has changed that. The castle is 'jetsam': one on a ship, part of the ship's activities, a part of life, an object is then thrown overboard, unwanted, mere rubbish, and is carried ashore, where it remains, a reminder of how it was once part of an active life setting.
