Rhododendrons should not be pruned unless space is a problem. Better to select the right varieties for the situation.

If this is not possible prune after flowering, as pruning cuts off the following years flowering it is better to do it over two years.

Cut out every second shoot almost to ground level the first year. the following year cut out the remainining old shoots as the new shoots will have grown and be ready to flower the next year.
