Behind shower valve handle and trim plate
White teflon is common. Just trim with a razor if concerned about appearance.
A trim kit is just the outside parts that you see. This will make you faucet look better, but it wont affect the function of your old valve. If your shower valve doesn't work right, replace it.
That is the handles, screws, face plate and everything except the rough in valve. The rough in is the main body of the valve that is installed in the wall before drywalling or putting the tub/shower in. The trim is put on after the walls are finished.
You should trim your nails when they start to get too long or if you notice any jagged edges that could catch on things. It's best to trim them after a shower when they are softer and easier to cut. Trim them regularly to maintain a neat appearance and prevent any potential issues like ingrown nails.
The connections on the faucet are pretty much the same for the type of piping you have. They should swap out fairly easily. There is a trim plate available that covers the old holes and gives you the single hole in the center.
