Annuals are planted in the spring and will die off in the fall, or usually when the first hard frost hits.

Perennials will become dormant in the fall/winter and "come back to life" next spring.

Some plants can be considered as both depending on where you live.

For example, a Hibiscus won't make it through an Up-State NY winter (in which case it would be an annual), but it will last year round in Florida, or CA.

Perennials are classified by Zone Hardiness. Lower the hardiness zone, the colder the weather the plant can handle. A geographical area that is inn Zone 3 means that the average winter temps go down to -20 deg F. Zone 10 means that the ave. winter temp. is around +30 deg F.

Why are there perennials and non perennials?

Perennials are plants that live for more than two years, regrowing each spring from the same root system. Non-perennials are plants that complete their life cycle within one growing season. This difference in life span is due to variations in genetic programming and environmental adaptations among different plant species.
