Propagation of disturbances from place to place in a regular and organized way. Most familiar are surface waves that travel on water, but sound, light, and the motion of subatomic particles all exhibit wavelike properties. In the simplest waves, the disturbance oscillates periodically with a fixed frequency and wavelength. Mechanical waves, such as sound, require a medium through which to travel, while electromagnetic waves do not require a medium and can be propagated through a vacuum. Propagation of a wave through a medium depends on the medium's properties.

In physics, a wave is a disturbance that transfers energy through a medium (such as air, water, or a solid substance) without permanently displacing the medium itself. Waves exhibit characteristics such as frequency, wavelength, amplitude, and speed, and can be classified as mechanical (requiring a medium to propagate) or electromagnetic (able to travel through a vacuum). Examples of waves include light waves, sound waves, and water waves.

---WAVE--- A wave can be described as a disturbance that travels through a medium from one location to another location. Ex.one of a series of ridges that moves across the surface of a liquid (especially across a large body of water)

A Wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from place to place; the movement of energy through a body of water.

cw: That is one of the great questions in science! In general, a wave indicates a change in energy that moves through space. De Broglie, a Nobel-Prize winning French scientist, had postulated that a traveling mass has a wavelength. Of course, we know that mass is a form a energy. There are also such things as "standing waves" which seem not to move, and they are formed by two like waves moving in opposing directions. There is much more to the subject, but this will have to suffice.
