Suppose a body moves from one point to another. If we draw a straight line between these two points, the length of this line is the displacement of the body no matters how much ground the body covers to reach the final point. It must be noted here that this straight line marks the shortest path between the two points. Thus, displacement can be defined as vector quantity which is the length of the shortest path connecting the point where a body starts to move and the point where the body finally reaches.

When an object moves in a certain path its diplacement between any two points on the path is the straight line distance from the first point to the second point. You should also give the direction of this straight line. For example; suppose an object travels in a circle. Then its displacement when it travels halfway around would be equal to the diameter of the circle (the direction would depend on where you started). Its displacement for the fulltrip would be zero because its final point would be the same place as the initial starting point.

If the object were a boat, it could also represent the amount of water the hull pushes aside (displaces) when it is stationary and afloat. The heavier the cargo the more the displacement.
