The things in nature that come closest are animals that exhibit bioluminescence, such as the glow worm or lighting bug, and some deep sea fishes. Scientists have been studying lightning bugs for years to learn the secrets of how they produce light without heat, in the hope that the process might be adapted for lighting for human use. Of man-made objects, luminescent phosphors, such as those used on watch dials, come close, as do electroluminescent panels, such as the backlights in Timex "Indiglo" watches.

A firefly gives off light but does not produce heat, as it creates light through a process called bioluminescence. The chemical reaction in its body produces light without the accompanying heat energy that is typically generated by combustion.
