Best Answer

White light is made up of 7 colours. When put through a prism like a raindrop or a glass block, the 7 colours all travel at different speeds, because some slow down more than others. Thus, light is dispersed into it's spectrum

White light is dispersed into its component colors because of its varying wavelengths. When white light passes through a prism, the different colors (ROYGBIV) in the light spectrum are refracted at different angles due to their different wavelengths, resulting in the separation of colors. This phenomenon is known as dispersion.

For normal incidence does white light disperse into it's constituent colours?

White light does not disperse into its constituent colors when it undergoes normal incidence. Dispersion occurs when white light passes through a prism or a diffraction grating, causing the different wavelengths of light to refract at different angles.

Why prisms disperse white light?

Prisms disperse white light because different colors of light have different wavelengths, causing them to refract at different angles as they pass through the prism. This results in the colors of the spectrum spreading out and becoming visible as a rainbow.

Are devices that separate white light into its individual colors waveometers?

No, devices that separate white light into its individual colors are called spectrometers or spectroscopes. They work by using prisms or diffraction gratings to disperse the light based on its wavelength, allowing for the analysis of the various colors present in the light.

Why does a diffraction grating will separate while light into colors?

A diffraction grating separates white light into colors because the grating contains multiple evenly spaced slits that cause constructive and destructive interference at different angles for different colors of light. This interference results in the dispersion of white light into its component colors when passing through the grating.

Do diamonds disperse sun rays like a prism?

Diamonds do not disperse sunlight like a prism does. While diamonds can reflect and refract light, they do not have the same dispersion properties as a prism, which separates white light into its different colors. Diamonds are known for their brilliance and sparkle, which is a result of their ability to reflect and refract light within the gemstone.

What happens to colors as light travels in water?

They disperse.

What happens when you make a rainbow with the help of a glass of water and sunlight?

The sunlight hits the glass of water and then the light disperses out as a spectrum of colour (rainbow). This is because sunlight is white light and white light contains the 7 colours of the rainbow. When it hits the glass the colours refract and disperse out as the spectrum of colours, which we see as a rainbow.

What can cause all colors of visible light to be seen in a rainbow?

water separate white light into visible light

What seeds use wind to disperse?
