A rainbow is an optical and meteorological phenomenon that causes a spectrum of light to appear in the sky when the Sun shines onto droplets of moisture in the Earth's atmosphere. They take the form of a multicoloured arc, with red on the outer layer and violet (or purple) in the inner section. The rainbow consists of seven colours wich are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Rainbows can be caused by other forms of water apart from rain including mist, dew and spray.

A rainbow forms when sunlight is refracted, or bent, at different angles as it passes through water droplets in the atmosphere. This causes the sunlight to separate into its individual colors, creating the arc of colors we see in the sky. The specific angle of refraction and reflection within the water droplets results in the circular shape of the rainbow.
