When two or more waves, of the same kind, are superimposed their amplitudes will add. If the two waves exactly match up, crest to crest and trough to trough then when they add you will get much larger crests and troughs. In this case the waves are said to be "in phase" and you get "constructive interference". If the waves match up crest to trough then the amplitudes add to zero. The waves are said to be "out of phase by a half wavelength" and you get "destructive interference".
