Ancient civilizations believed in strict justice as a way to maintain social order and prevent crime. They viewed harsh punishments as deterrents to potential wrongdoers, attempting to dissuade others from committing similar offenses. Additionally, these societies often viewed punishment as a tool to showcase the power and authority of their rulers or legal systems.
