Einstein wanted to avoid military service in Germany, therefore he gave up his German citizenship. He then moved to Switzerland where he did his pre-university and university diplomas. In 1901 he landed his first job with the Swiss Patent Office in Berne. In order to work at a Swiss government office, he had to be a Swiss citizen. He held his Swiss citizenship for the rest of his life.
