In 1963 the proposed nonpolitical confederation Maphilindo (for Malaya, the Philippines, and Indonesia) was, for Jakarta and Manila, a tactic to prevent or delay the formation of the Federation of Malaysia. The aim of Maphilindo, a proposed confederation between the Philippines (Ma), Indonesia (Phil), and Malaysia (Indo), was to promote unity, cooperation, and mutual support among the three Southeast Asian nations. It aimed to strengthen diplomatic ties, enhance regional security, and foster economic development in the region.
