If I remember right, if you Archive and Install it will only erase the CORE operating system and not the other files. It just re-installs over the OS.
You may have to reinstall some 3rd party applications but the other files and folders SHOULDN'T be touched. If you do an Erase and Install it will wipe the HD clean and install a brand new OS.
Make a backup just to make sure. The USB external HD housings are real cheap and you can buy your own HD to put in it for a backup drive.

I actually just submitted this question to answer it to help other people out. To delete all files from a mac you simply make sure you are running Finder, then you type in the following commands. Command N Command A Command Delete Command Shift Delete Enter Bang all gone
On a PC, search Raze on your computer (include hidden and system files). Delete any files that come up that say Raze on it. On a Mac, I don't know.

insert the Leopard CD into your mac. Turn it on, after you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key, which will cause the mac to boot using the leopard CD. once it is booted, it will walk you through reinstalling Mac OS X.

All windows files can play on a Mac if you run boot camp (which is bascially installing windows on your mac) if you want to run windows files on a native AMc operating system you must have the program installed for the mac version. For example, if you have Micrsoft Word for Mac then you can view files like .doc or .docx on your mac. Same with .wmp, you need window's media player installed on your mac. Hope this helps.
