Of course, you could go your whole life, reading no poetry, and still breathe, and live, and probably be very happy. So, maybe it isn't important to you... but for some of us, it helps with the happiness, the breathing sometimes.

Poetry does this by imparting velocity, speed and momentum to the otherwise still and inert human mind and helps it take off. Tragedy was, for centuries, advised as the best form of literature because it purged human mind through strong and alternating emotions by causing emotional catharsis. Poetry is the budding, flowering and ripening of human mind in the social setting. So Poetry is of paramount importance to society.
