We learn poems mostly to express ourselves in ways that we understand... or because we want to. It is just another way to be educated. __________ Poetry is a good way to learn concise writing. In a poem, you have to take an idea that you could normally talk for an hour about, and you have to condense the ideas and thoughts and emotions down to one line or one stanza. It helps people learn to choose their words wisely... to choose the exact word that you mean, rather than using an approximate word, and then following up with three sentences to clarify. Poetry is also a good outlet for self-expression. A lot of people take it seriously, and will assume that if you wrote a poem about something, that you put a lot of thought into that subject... and besides that, it can be totally romantic. Even if you detest poetry and hate reading anything but comic books, you could still learn it so that you can attract dates. :) I promise... LOTS of people fall for poetry.
People like poetry for many different reasons. Some reasons may be personal while others may be common among everyone else. Examples: Some like poetry because they feel they can relate to what they are reading and therefore they no longer feel they are alone in what they are feeling.(Hope that wasn't confusing.) This is a reason that is on a more personal level. Some like poetry because they admire the life lessons they can give or they love the stories they tell. This reason is more common amongst people. Some like poetry that rhymes because they think it makes it easier to follow. (Which isn't always the case.) Others like poetry that doesn't rhyme because they think it makes it more from the heart. (Which isn't always the case either.) There are many more reasons why people like poetry, but everyone differs on their reasons so much, it would be impossible to list them all.
Poetry is good for children for a variety of reasons. For one thing, it gives them a way to express themselves, and to find common ground with others. Additionally, it helps children learning English, so they can work with the rhythm and their beginning language skills to express themselves in English.
