He wrote Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucreceduring periods when the playhouses were closed due to plague. He needed a different revenue stream to make up for the lost box office admission. Shakespeare is known for his plays. He wrote narrative poetry to make money when the theaters were closed due to plague. He wrote his sonnets so that he would gain recognition as a poet. Playwrights did not receive recognition in his day.

Shakespeare's long poems Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece were meant for public consumption. Selling copies of them kept body and soul together during the years when the theatres were closed due to plague.

Shakespeare's sonnets, on the other hand, were intimate communications with people he was close to. He did not publish them himself; someone else collected and printed them. We see in Much Ado About Nothing how Benedick struggles to write a love-Sonnet to Beatrice because that was the conventional way of expressing such sentiments. Fortunately, Shakespeare was much better at it than Benedick.
