Juliet killed herself and Romeo drank poison because he thought Juliet was already dead.
Mercutio says Romeo is already dead because he believes Romeo's infatuation with Rosaline has left him lifeless and devoid of vitality and energy. Mercutio sees Romeo as being consumed by his love for Rosaline, which in turn has caused him to lose interest in life. He uses this metaphor to illustrate the extent of Romeo's emotional distress.
Juliet dies by taking a potion that makes her appear dead in order to escape marrying Paris. However, Romeo does not receive the message explaining the plan and believes she is truly dead. Grief-stricken, Romeo then kills himself, and upon awakening to find Romeo dead, Juliet takes her own life as well.

They could see that Jesus was already dead, so they did not break his legs to speed up the process. As an assurance that he was truly dead, one of the soldiers stabbed him in the heart with his spear.
