Carol is one of the four cocktail waitresses who work in a modern cafe bar called shakers. She is a mature, educated woman who has completed her O levels, A levels and has a bachelor of arts degree. Her dream job is to become a photographer and the main reason why she hasn't achieved her job yet is because it's hard to find job's, especially in thatcherite Britain, which is when Shakers was first published. So she works in Shakers to earn an income and is trying to find an assistant job in art.
Carol is seen as a snob and a bit big headed by the other girls in shakers.
