Tragedy is the genre of the play "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. -- 405 B.C.E.).

Specifically, the play deals with Theban King Oedipus' fall from divine and human grace. Oedipus is capable of great deeds, such as saving Thebans from being devoured to the last one by the monstrous Sphinx. But he has the tragic flaw of pride in thinking that he can escape his unenviable fate and the divine curse on his house. That Oedipus does great things, lacks intent behind his villainous acts and suffers humiliating personal and professional defeats therefore make his story a tragedy.
