The story of Romeo and Juliet takes place in Italy during the period we now refer to as the Renaissance (1450-1600). The feud between the houses of Mantecchi and Capuletti is first alluded to by Dante in the Divine Comedy (1308-1320) and throughout the Italian Renaissance was the inspiration for several poems.

So Shakspeare was borrowing a familiar plot from Italian literature hoping to make an English version of equal success. It worked. It is one of his most popular plays.

It has been filmed a number of times. MGM did it in a rather- Bard-faithful version in l935, the more recent one was done in l968 directed by Franco Zefferrli . There are, as one might guess numerous variations on the plot including the West Side Story.

It isn't. The action takes place in mid-July, but the date is not specified in the text. Each director has to choose the temporal setting that suits him or her.
