Making him an irresponsible reverend who is both selfish and cruel. Proctor has always disliked him, and stopped attending sunday service long before the witch trials began. It is his personal dislike that allows John to have the courage to try to stand up against the reverend in court.

Samuel Parris was the reverand of the church in Salem Village. It was his daughter and niece who were first afflicted. Some believe he played up the importance of what was going on to divert the population's attention from wanting to fire him.

Samuel Parris was in charge of the church in Salem Village. Nicholas Noyes lead the main church in Salem. I'm not sure if they'd be classified as "pastors," but religious terminology is not my strong suit.
