you, or your attorney, must contact the clerk of the court immediately, either as many days prior as possible, but no later than the morning of the court date, (so as not to show contempt of the court) advising them which hospital you are in, who your primary physician is, and what the prognosis is, so the court may schedule an alternate date.

If your court appearance is due to a criminal charge and you are on a bond or bail, and have not advised the courts (AND the bail bond company), it is most probable that a bench warrant will have been issued for your arrest.

If the case is based on a civil matter and you are the respondent, then it is most probable that a default judgement will have been issued. The only recourse you may have is to contact the court immediately, requesting an appearance, and providing the reason that you were unable to advise the court in advance. This would typically require that your hospitalisation was such that you were incapable of communicating and the hospital and physician can document this: eg, under surgery where you were incapable of communicating, or receiving medications of such a nature that you were incapable of communicating. The only other possible consideration 'may be' a bereavement. However, you've already indicated that you were hospitalised.
