Currently World of Warcraft. 9 million users at 15 dollars a month...135 million a month....1,620,000,000 dollars a year, plus initial purchase of game and purchase of two expansions....that's right...1 BILLION 620 Millon a year.
EDIT: Actually, WOW's current player total is approximately 11.8 million active subscribers (according to Blizzard's statistics), which would put WOW's GDP at ~$2.124 B / year plus initial game and expansion purchases totalling $60 per player. On average, an additional 12,600 new players sign up each month. You can do the math. It's incredible.
As of April 2014, the Harry Potter series earned $7.7 billion, making it the highest grossing film series. I expect that the Marvel Universe series will overtake that with their next release. Because of the longevity of James Bond, that'll probably take the prize within 10 years.
However, adjusted for inflation (again, as of 2014), the highest grossing series would be James Bond with about $14.5 billion.
