Key can refer to any of the individual levers on a keyboard that is pressed to produce a tone. It can refer to parts of other instruments pressed down for the same reason. Key can also refer to the most general description of the tonality of a piece of music. In most western musics, a piece will be written in a particular 'key', as in A flat major or E minor. This means that the harmonic movement in the piece brings it to a final resolution with, respectively, an A flat major chord or an E minor chord. Some pieces will have complicated harmonies and will move from key to key before finally resolving.

The term key is used to denote the scale in which the song is written. For example, if a song is written in C major, there will be no sharps or flats, because the scale of C major contains no sharps or flats. The key is usually written at the beginning of a music piece just before the time signature.

The key of the song refers to what notes are being played.

For example:

If a song contains the notes E, F♯, G, A, B, C, and D then the song is in the key of E minor.

The chords A minor, F major, G major and C major could be in 2 keys; A minor and C major and both keys contain the notes A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. If you were to play a scale in A minor, the first note would be an A, if you were to play a C major scale, the first note would be a C.
